About Spiritual Direction
Spiritual Direction is a sacred time of meeting together to share your personal dreams, struggles, frustrations, fears, to deepen your spiritual practices, explore your faith, or grow closer to God. It is a process of discerning what God's love and light is guiding you towards so that you can find peace, direction and confidence as you continue to grow along your spiritual path.
Spiritual Direction ... and ancient practice for today.
I first learned about Spiritual Direction when I was studying the lives of the Saints and discovered women like Julian of Norwich and Theresa of Avila who lived cloistered lives and yet spent time with people of their villages listening to them helping them discover a deeper and richer spiritual life. I realized that I had been offering spiritual direction (although I did not know it had a name) intuitively since becoming a minister as I worked with migrant children, as a hospital chaplain, with funeral homes, and with my congregations.
In 2001, I began First Steps Spirituality Center. Our mission was "to provide spiritual support for hurting children and teens." At First Steps I offered spiritual direction to hundreds of children who were going through so many hardships including loss of a parent, surviving the suicide of a loved one, being bullied, drug use, self harm, eating disorders, and general unhappiness. Because of my work there I was awarded the Hero of Mental Health Award.
I was offering spiritual direction to the children, teens and parents at First Steps, but I also longed to have my own spiritual direction. I looked for a long time to find someone I trusted enough to share my deepest dreams, desires, hopes and fears with. After much searching I found a spiritual director, Bishop Richard Hanifen and the time I spent with him changed my life. He held nonjudgmental space for me to talk about my spirituality. He did not guide me, but rather held quiet accepting space and in that space, God's spirit spoke to me and I grew closer to God than ever before.
I would like to offer this ancient practice of Spiritual Direction to you. I would like to be a person who you trust enough to share your hopes, dreams and struggles with. I do not believe that anyone can "tell you" what God wants you to do, or what you need to do. Rather I believe that through holding Sacred Space with you and listening deeply to you, God will be present and you will discover the best path for your next steps on your journey.
